Summer Financial Aid

Summer financial aid awards are packaged separately from fall and spring awards. Types of financial aid available for summer school are mainly comprised of Pell Grants, student and/or parent loans.

Notification of your Summer Awards will be sent via your UNC Asheville email address.

To apply for summer financial aid you must:

  • You must have a completed 2017-2018 FAFSA on file with the UNC Asheville Office of Financial Aid.
  • It is best to complete the Summer Financial Aid Request Form and submit no later than April 30, 2018.
  • Enroll in a minimum of six credit hours to receive loans

Federal Direct Loan Eligibility

Your eligibility for a Federal Direct Loan for a summer session is contingent upon the federal loan limits based on credit hour completion. At UNC Asheville, summer session is still considered part of the 2017-2018 academic year. Therefore, you cannot receive more than the federal loan limits denoted below for the fall, spring and summer cumulatively.

Classification of Student Credit Hours

Loan Limits for the Year
Dependent Student

Loan Limits for the Year

Freshman 0 - 29 $5,500 $9,500
Sophomore 30 - 59 $6,500 $10,500
Junior 60 - 89 $7,500 $12,500
Senior 90 or more $7,500 $12,500

Federal Pell Grant Eligibility

Students may be eligible to receive Pell Grant funding for the summer term if he/she was not full time during the fall and spring terms. Student can not receive more than their full time scheduled awards.

If you plan to attend both sessions, you must register for both at the beginning of the first session. Withdrawal from hours, after the financial aid has been credited to our account, will result in a reduction of aid for any subsequent sessions and charges on your account. Undergraduate students, who register for 6 hours (half-time) and subsequently drop below half-time, will have loan aid cancelled and will need to repay the institution if those loans have already disbursed as you must be enrolled in at least six credit hours to receive Federal Direct Loan funding at this institution.

Important: If you submit an application for summer aid after the April 30th deadline, you must provide a statement explaining why your application is late. Supporting documentation may be required. Late applications will be reviewed and processed on a case-by-case basis based upon the students extenuating circumstances.
